Introduction

The first school library was set up on the first floor of the Wen-Hong Hall, which occupied an area of 316 square meters. Along with the increase in both the number of students and the volumes of books in the library’s collection, the decision was made to expand the facility to an area of more than 5000 square meters. In response to such a need, the new library was moved into the Sheng-You Hall from the fifth floor to the eighth floor in 2001. It currently occupies an area of 5700 square meters to and contains nearly 210,000 volumes. The whole library is networked to both the campus-wide Internet and wireless Internet. To meet the needs of teaching and research, the library has been constantly expanding its collection and trying to computerize its contents and the administrative system to achieve greater efficiency for the faculty and students. As of Oct. 31, 2003, the library held 127,282 items, including 638 periodical titles, 5,132 pieces of audiovisual materials and 121,512 volumes of books.

Organization

The administration of the library is divided into three divisions in accordance with their respective professional fields: the technique support and service division, the reader’s service division and the collection information service division.

The technique support and service division is responsible for acquiring, purchasing, classifying and cataloging the books and non-book materials and maintaining the bibliography database.

The reader’s service division is responsible for providing the circulation and reference consult services, guiding the library instruction, expediting the interlibrary loan and arranging the books in stacks.

The collection information division is responsible for contacting and coordinating for the development of the library automation management system, maintaining the library web site and the various library database systems and the audio-visual information services. In addition to these three areas, the library advisory council was established in order to assist the reform and development of the library’s administration office.
